Chapter 16

Once it was just the Invictus and Intrepid on the connection, Rivezt said, “How are you both feeling? Any fevers, nausea, anything unusual?”

Vared and Talia shook their heads. “Beyond my face and jaw being sore from when the orange guy hit me, I feel fine,” said Talia.

“There should be a small med unit on the shuttle that the Commander can use to heal it. I will also need blood samples from both of you.”

“Have you received the info from the base?” Vared asked.

Tolvex nodded. “All the medical information has been given to Rivezt. We’ll encrypt it all and send it to King Sovex. If there’s a traitor, we can’t let the crew know we’re aware of the virus. How are we going to explain you and Lady Talia on the Intrepid?”

“Use me,” Talia said, to her surprise.

“What do you mean?” Wurvez asked.

“Make it sound like I’m traumatized from my experiences with the Durelians and terrified to be around others. Durek was the one who saved me and he’s the only one who can get near me without me freaking out.”

“That might work,” Tolvex said, his eyes thoughtful. “But why not bring the Intrepid into the hangar bay?”

“I panic at the thought that others could enter the ship without my knowledge.”

“It makes you sound weaker than you are,” said Vared with a frown.

“No one really knows me yet. And among humans, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD isn’t considered as shameful as it used to be. A couple of the women might question it, but really, who among the Svesti would know any better how I might react? Isn’t it to our advantage if they underestimate me?” Talia shrugged.

“She has a point,” said Rivezt. “I can say that as a healer, for now it is best to allow her time to emotionally heal from the trauma as she wishes.”

“The human females will want to speak with you,” Tolvex said.

“We can do it via voice only. I don’t want anyone to see me. It will allow people to imagine what might have occurred but offer no proof one way or another.” Talia grimaced. “I dislike misleading the women, but I see no other choice until you’ve identified the traitor or traitors.”

“I would like to consult with Lady Natasha about the virus. Her knowledge of human medicine is greater than mine,” said Rivezt.

Talia nodded. “We should be fine if she knows the truth. She’s used to maintaining patient privacy. And Rachel might be an asset for flushing out a traitor and can keep it under wraps. Emmy could help with tech stuff, but I’m not sure how well she could keep it all a secret. I just don’t know her well enough yet to judge.”

“I think it would be a good idea to have Lady Emmy help us. She is becoming very proficient with our technology and looks beyond the obvious,” Tolvex said.

Talia shrugged. “I’m good with it if you feel comfortable. Vared?”

“If you think it’s best, Tolvex, brief Lady Emmy at the same time as Ladies Natasha and Rachel,” Vared said.
